Paramount View development: Where are the answers?

By KW Mak

March 14, 2011

Datuk Bandar MBPJ OSC chair[person] RE: Approval of Paramount View Development by Petaling Jaya City Council OSC Committee I have written to you back on 8 Nov 2010 on the matter of the Paramount View development, raising several important issues on the validity and legality of the actions that the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) […]

Speaking up for Arts-Ed

By Natasha Khanum

February 21, 2011

THE idea that all us are out to “hina Melayu” is so last decade. By blaming Arts-Ed for bringing out “isu perkauman”, the Gabungan Bela Hak Insan has stooped really low in order to spread its own political ideologies. According to the Gabungan, they were “merely pointing out errors” in the My Balik Pulau newsletter […]

Against FHM and Red FM ‘s sexualisation of women

By Nadira Ilana

January 17, 2011

RECENTLY, Red FM conducted a video interview for FHM ‘s Girls Next Door competition. The video was, in my opinion, sexist and explicitly derogatory towards women. I have tried contacting both the radio station and the magazine but to no avail. I left comments on their YouTube and Facebook accounts, and even tried emailing the […]

“Religion”: Error in e-census form?

By Chuah Siew Eng

August 19, 2010

I WISH to draw to the public’s attention to a possible glitch in the e-census. An answer I clicked for the category “religion” was different in the PDF copy I printed. Thinking I may have made a mistake, I reviewed my answers and confirmed it was not my error. When I sought an explanation, the […]

Penan Support Group: Govt denials “appalling”

By Penan Support Group

July 15, 2010

THE Penan Support Group (PSG) is appalled that Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie has refuted the findings in the PSG’s mission report uncovering more cases of rape and sexual exploitation among the Penan. Heng cited minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil’s “fact-finding mission” on 13 July to the Baram region […]

THE Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) Malaysia and the Writers Alliance for Media Independence (Wami) condemn the Home Ministry’s banning of 1Funny Malaysia, Perak Darul Kartun and Isu Dalam Kartun. These cartoon compilations are by Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar. According to online daily Malaysiakini, whose subsidiary Kinibooks is the publisher of 1Funny […]

Tiger death by Rela not first time

By Mycat

June 24, 2010

WE refer to the killing of a three-year old male tiger by a People’s Volunteer Corp (Rela) member because the tiger was spotted in a village and suspected of attacking poultry in Sungai Bayor, Perak. We understand the villagers’ fear, but the matter should not have been handled in this manner. There is a clear […]

Bumiputera-ness: who decides?

By Singa Pura Pura

June 24, 2010

MINISTER in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz’s recent assertion respecting the bumiputera-ness of Siamese Malaysians piques my interest to no end. Who or what decides on the bumiputera-ness or the bumiputera-less-ness of a Malaysian citizen? Is it the Federal Constitution? Was it the Reid Commission? Is it the cabinet, or […]

Fifa, reserve place for Malaysia!

By Ta' Melayu Hilang Di-Dunia

Fifa World Cup 2010 logo

I’M upset that the Malaysian football team is not playing in the Fifa World Cup in South Africa. In fact, Malaysia has never made it to the Fifa World Cup. Ever. Doesn’t the rest of the world realise that they cannot expect the Malaysian team to compete on an even playing field? Don’t they realise that they need to […]

Frequency and brutality of rapes alarming

By All Women's Action Society

June 8, 2010

ALL Women’s Action Society (Awam) is horrified by a report in The Star of a serial rapist who repeatedly assaulted six secondary school students over one year and used the mobile phone recordings of the rapes as threats. This comes barely a few weeks after shocking reports of a gang rape of a 14-year-old student in a school in Rawang by seven classmates.
