Signs of the times

[get_post_meta single=1 key="byline"] | August 28, 2009 2 Comments

Graffiti, near Central Market, of the outline of political aide Teoh Beng Hock’s body, as it was found on the roof of the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s office. Incidences such as Teoh’s death have only exacerbated the public’s distrust of government enforcement agencies, which are increasingly seen to be politically biased.

MALAYSIA’S 52nd anniversary of independence is upon us. 2009 has thus far already been tumultuous for our nation, with political infighting, rising criminality, mysterious deaths in custody, delayed whippings, and by-elections galore.

We’ve also seen crowds running in the face of teargas canisters. State assemblypersons under a tree, in full regalia. Clandestine camera phone stills of public figures. A body lying sprawled on a Shah Alam roof. The list could go on, especially since the year has yet to end.

To commemorate Merdeka, The Nut Graph has put together a modest essay of visuals, an anthology of signs of Malaysian times.

You could add a picture of those orange and white striped sticks jutting out at traffic light junctions and where u-turns are not permitted.

Then you could have another picture of them when they’re flattened.
