AN exhibition of 60 photographs celebrating Malaysia’s cinematic icon, the late Tan Sri P Ramlee, is being held at Badan Warisan Malaysia’s Heritage Centre in Kuala Lumpur from 24 June to 16 July 2011.

The photographs show scenes from the legendary actor-singer-composer’s films from 1949 to 1973. The exhibition, organised by publisher MPH in association with Badan Warisan Malaysia, also features images of P Ramlee in his role as film director. The photos are from the personal collection of Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, a life-long admirer of P Ramlee.

The exhibition was officially launched on Friday, 24 June 2011, in conjunction with the re-launch of two biographies on P Ramlee written by Ahmad Sarji, P Ramlee: Erti Yang Sakti (1999) and P Ramlee: The Bright Star (2003). These books have been reprinted and will be available as a box set for RM79. The biographies cover P Ramlee’s onscreen life through exposition of his films and songs, as well as offer information on P Ramlee, the man.

  1. orang banyak lama says

P Ramlee was deceived by Malaysia. He resigned from Keris studios to come to Malaysia because he was given the impression that Umno would welcome a fellow bumi from Singapore. He was mistaken. He was left in the lurch by our own bumis, who talked so much about Malay culture but when it came to the crunch, everyone balked and forgot about P Ramlee. He was unable to get loans for his projects. Whatever he did, he used his own money. Finally he was bankrupt, and the last straw was when his house was repossessed by the bank. This caused him to have a heart attack. He did not survive that. Even then Umno did nothing for his family until much later. Now every year they talk of nothing but P Ramlee’s movies and songs. Don’t keep repeating his movies/songs. After a few years things get ad nauseam. So please don’t try to console yourself. The past is gone. Now just do the right thing. Kick out those who treated him so badly 40 years ago.
