Nik Aziz accepts Najib’s decision on open debate

July 7, 2009

KOTA BARU, 7 July 2009: PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said today he accepted Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s decision about the invitation for an open debate.

Najib said yesterday that the debate would be of little use, and that other Umno leaders were also against the idea. Umno secretary-general Tengku Datuk Seri Adnan Tengku Mansor and Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim had both criticised the proposal.

Nik Aziz, who is Kelantan menteri besar, said it was up to the prime minister whether to accept the invitation.

“As a preacher, my job is to engage others through words of wisdom and advice, and finally, through a debate. If it is not accepted, it’s all right. I’ve done my part,” he told Bernama in his office today.

Nik Aziz had sent a letter inviting Najib to the debate following the police report lodged by Kelantan Umno Youth claiming that Nik Aziz’s ceramah was seditious for likening Umno to communism and deviant teaching.

Nik Aziz said despite the rejection, he harboured no ill-feelings towards the prime minister. — Bernama
