Shahidan pulls out of VP race

KANGAR, 20 Oct 2008: Former Perlis menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim is withdrawing his offer to contest the Umno vice-presidency and will instead concentrate on contesting a supreme council (MT) seat.

The Perlis Umno Liaison chairman said latest developments showed there were many candidates vying for the vice-presidency and felt that he should make way for the best candidates including those representing the northern states.

“Although I believe many divisions will continue to nominate me, I will concentrate on the MT seat,” he told Bernama today.

He thanked the divisions that had nominated him to contest the post of Umno vice-president.

Shahidan said that so far, the Perlis Umno Liaison Body had only proposed his name to represent Perlis in the contest for the MT seat.

Shahidan has so far received nine nominations to contest the MT seat and needs only one more to meet the quota of 10 nominations to qualify for the contest. — Bernama
