Seventy-three deviationist groups detected nationwide

SERDANG, 19 Nov 2008: The Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim) has detected seventy-three deviationist groups nationwide, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Jakim had also identified their leaders and their teaching contents as well as recruitment methods which included “Multi Level Marketing” (MLM), he said.

“MLM is a new and structured method used by deviationist groups to charm Muslims and expand their influence,” he told reporters after visiting the Halal Product Research Institute here.

He said efforts to wipe out deviationist teachings would be intensified and continuous cooperation between Jakim and state religious authorities were necessary.

On the police report lodged by Malaysia Today blog editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin yesterday, Zahid said the blogger should not pretend as though he was championing Islam.

“If he really champions Islam, why did he insult Islam through the articles he wrote before this?” he questioned. — Bernama
