Stolen Tabung Haji funds will be returned

January 19, 2009

BANGI, 19 Jan 2009: The government has assured Tabung Haji depositors that misappropriated monies will be returned in full, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Depositors will not lose one sen as Tabung Haji is a corporation that is fully guaranteed by the government,” he said when commenting newspaper reports that two Tabung Haji staff in Sandakan were suspended from work for withdrawing RM300,000 in deposits.

Ahmad Zahid said necessary action would be taken against the Tabung Haji staff if they were found guilty.

“Investigation will be conducted as soon as possible. They will be brought to court if there is proof.”

He assured Tabung Haji depositors that their money was safe and that such an incident would not recur and urged them to check their accounts regularly.

On another note, Ahmad Zahid said the National Wakaf Corporation would be established under the Malaysian Wakaf Foundation aimed at streamlining the management of wakaf (endowment) land nationwide.

“Malaysia has RM1.9 billion worth of undeveloped wakaf land. They comprise 2,700 hectares of general wakaf land and 3,500 hectares of specific wakaf land.”

He said efforts to develop wakaf land include the building of a Wakaf, Zakat and Mal Academy, (Azam) to be supervised by the Wakaf, Zakat and Haji Department (Jawhar). — Bernama
