Polling in all three by-elections closes

April 7, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 7 April 2009: Polling in the Bukit Gantang, Bukit Selambau and Batang Ai by-elections closed at 5pm today.

In Sarawak’s Batang Ai state constituency, which has 8,006 voters, the vote counting began at the Lubok Antu Sports Complex Hall at 3.04pm.

The vote-tallying centre for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary constituency, Perak, is at the Taiping Municipal Council Hall while that for the Bukit Selambau state seat, Kedah, is at the Sekolah Menengah Teknik Satu Hall in Sungai Petani.

The results are expected to be known as early as 9pm.

A total of 39,038 voters or 70.43% of the total of 55,562 registered voters had cast their ballots in the by-election for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary constituency at 4pm today.

Election Commission (EC) Chairperson Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said that in Bukit Selambau, 67% or about 22,500 of the 35,140 registered voters in the constituency had cast their votes in the by-election for the state seat at 4pm.

For the Batang Ai state constituency, 72.64% or 5,808 of the total of 8,006 voters had cast their ballot.

Abdul Aziz said the final turnout figures for the three by-elections could only be known later because polling had just ended at 5pm.

In Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau, intermittent heavy rains were reported until the polling centres were closed, he said. – Bernama
