KUALA LUMPUR, 11 June 2009: Datuk Mustafa Ali was appointed PAS secretary-general today, replacing Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, who did not wish to be re-appointed.
The decision to appoint Mustafa, who was previously the party’s election director, was made during its central working committee meeting today, the first after the weekend party elections.
PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa, when contacted, said the meeting also appointed Datuk Husam Musa, Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul and Mohamad Sabu to the central working committee.
Two women leaders, Wan Ubaidah Omar and Member of Parliament for Kota Raja Dr Mariah Mahmud, were also reappointed as members of the committee, joining another woman leader, Dr Lo’Lo’ Ghazali, who was elected during the party polls.
Both Husam and Mohamad Sabu did not defend their vice-presidencies in the party polls, and instead challenged Nasharudin for the deputy president’s post, which Nasharudin retained.

Husam is in charge of party strategy and planning, while Abdul Halim, who failed to win a seat on the central working committee, was made election director.
The party also appointed Idris Ahmad as information chief, replacing Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who is now one of the three vice-presidents.
Dr Hatta Ramli was retained as treasurer-general.
Also reappointed to the central working committee were Anuar Tahir, Perak PAS deputy chief Asmuni Awi, and Sabah PAS deputy chief Ahmad Dolla.
The only new face on the committee was Paroi assemblyperson Mohamad Taufek Ghani.
When contacted, Kamaruddin said he opted out from holding the secretary-general position, which he had held since June 2005, for personal reasons. — Bernama
