Missing Umno deputy branch chief found dead

GERIK, 17 Jan 2009: An Umno deputy branch chief who was reported missing while fishing in Sungai Perak near Kampung Kuala Kenderong, here two days ago, was found drowned today.

Gerik OCPD Supt Mahad Nor Abdullah said the body of Zainal Abidin Abdul Rahim was found floating in the river by a fishermen at 7.30am, some 200 metres from where he was believed to have fallen from his boat.

Police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel plucked the body from the water and sent to Gerik Hospital, he said.

His body had been claimed by family members and brought to Kampung Kuala Kenderong for burial.

Zainal Abidin, 63, had gone fishing at 7am on 15 Jan. At around noon however, a fisherperson saw his boat adrift in the river but saw no signs of him.

Police, together with Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department and Rela launched a search operation at 1pm upon receiving a report about the incident. — Bernama
