Keen contest for SUPP Youth, Women’s wings

December 10, 2008

KUCHING, 10 Dec 2008: The forthcoming Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) triennial delegates’ conference (TDC) this weekend is expected to see a keen contest for all positions in the Youth and Women’s wings.

The contest for the top leadership in Youth Wing will see a two-cornered fight between Batu Lintang branch Youth chief Sih Hua Tong, 44, and Sibu Youth chairman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, 33, after the two-term incumbent Alan Sim announced he was not seeking re-election in the upcoming TDC.

Sim is the Youth election committee chairperson.

The nomination held today at the party headquarters here saw a total of 128 nominees battling for 72 posts in the Youth wing.

Meanwhile, a two-cornered fight is shaping up for the top women’s post where deputy chief Cheng Yi will take on secretary, Suzanne Lee.

This comes after incumbent Datin Janet Lau, who led for three consecutive  terms since 1999, announced she was not seeking re-election at the party’s TDC.

Lau, who is election committee chairperson, announced that 101 nominees were eyeing for 49 posts in the Women’s wing.

The Youth and Women’s wings will hold their conference and election on 12 Dec, followed by the party’s main body on 13 and 14 Dec.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is scheduled to open the TDC on 13 Dec. — Bernama
