New MCA Wanita chief strives to woo young members

October 17, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Oct 2008: New MCA Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun has resolved to woo young members under 35.

She hoped to increase the membership by between 35 and 40% from 418,000 at present.

“Currently, about 30% of MCA Wanita members are under 35. I will strive to increase the membership to enable the movement to look more youthful, vibrant and dynamic,” she told reporters after the opening of the 33rd MCA Wanita assembly here, today.

She said new members would be provided with training based on their background.

“We will create a conducive environment for new members to pursue their ambitions,” said Chew who turned 44 today.

She won unopposed on nomination day after Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen decided not to defend her post. Ng is vying for one of the vice-president posts at the party elections tomorrow.

On whether MCA will set up a Puteri wing, Chew said there was no such plan at the moment.

The wing also welcomed its new office bearers, with Datuk Yu Chok Tow as deputy chief, while Lee Pit Chern, Tan Ah Eng, Lim Bee Kau and Shim Tshin Nyuk were elected vice-charpersons. There were also 23 central committee members elected. — Bernama
