Blacksmith torches himself after squabble

January 19, 2009

ALOR SETAR, 19 Jan 2009: A blacksmith was believed to have torched himself after a quarrel with his wife at their house at Taman Abadi, Jalan Kuala Kedah here yesterday.

Kota Star Crime Investigation chief DSP Mohd Feisal Libertus Abdullah said Ooi Chong Kian, 48, was believed to have poured petrol and then torched himself  in a room in the house after a quarrel with his wife at about 8.30pm.

“The couple was believed to have had a quarrel when the wife threatened divorce if Ooi did not give her money to spend for the Chinese New Year celebration,” he told reporters today.

He said Ooi also threatened to set his wife and their child ablaze, but the two managed to escape and leave the house.

Mohd Feisal said that the wife, on seeing her husband setting himself on fire, screamed for help.

Fire fighters who arrived at scene could not save Ooi, but managed to douse the flame in the room, he added.

He said Ooi’s charred remains was found near a container with some petrol inside. — Bernama
