Mat rempit joint panel to check illegal racing

May 6, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 May 2009: The Home Ministry will form a joint committee comprising government agencies aimed at checking illegal racing by mat rempits.

Deputy Minister Jelaing Mersat said the committee was aimed at strengthening law enforcement by the ministry, departments and agencies.

He said it would discuss legal issues and create a mechanism to check illegal racing by ‘mat rempits’ adding agencies would conduct continuous operations to stamp out the menace.

“Street racing is against the law and a threat to public order. Illegal racers pose a danger to other road users,” he said in a statement today.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein yesterday directed Jelaing to study the spread of illegal racing by ‘mat rempits’ and find ways to check the problem.

Meanwhile in SHAH ALAM, the Selangor government announced that they will launch a programme to turn Mat Rempit into useful citizens, said Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

“We will announce the programme in two or three months’ time. We want to change their (Mat Rempit) ways so that they will no longer be regarded a menace to the society,” he said.

New approaches are needed to stifle Mat Rempit’s indulgence and divert their energy to do beneficial activities, he told reporters after presenting cash rewards to Selangor soccer players for winning the FA Cup, here today. — Bernama
