Eli Wong’s leave extended

By Deborah Loh

February 25, 2009

SHAH ALAM, 25 Feb 2009: Bukit Lanjan assemblyperson Elizabeth Wong remains as executive councillor (exco) pending the completion of police investigations into the taking and dissemination of intimate photos of her.

The Selangor executive council and Menteri Besar (MB) Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim decided at their weekly meeting today that no decision on Wong’s offer to resign would be made until the police probe was completed.

Khalid said at a press conference after the exco meeting in the state secretariat building that Wong’s leave had been extended indefinitely.

“The exco discussed this today and decided to let her continue her leave while waiting for police to finish their investigations. Any decision on her status will only be made after that,” he told reporters at his office.

Khalid had earlier today been granted an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to seek the Ruler’s advice on Wong’s offer to resign as both assemblyperson and exco.

Sultan Sharafuddin declined to offer any advice, leaving the matter to Khalid as the MB, on the grounds that the palace was to remain above politics.

Khalid said he and the exco were grateful to Sultan Sharafuddin for expressing his sadness over the invasion of Wong’s privacy.

Last week, Khalid said the exco had to reach a decision on Wong’s status in a month’s time as they could not afford to operate without one exco beyond that period.

Any decision on her position as assemblyperson would also likely be further delayed, as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said that the matter would be decided when Wong returns from leave.

The 37-year-old former human rights and environmental activist, who is a first-time assemblyperson, is believed to be currently overseas.
