KUALA TERENGGANU, 7 Jan 2009: PAS has reminded its supporters and the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) election machinery to take the Kuala Terengganu by-election seriously and not consider it an avenue to rejoice.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the Kuala Terengganu by-election would have a big impact on PR in its efforts to increase the number of opposition representatives in Parliament.
“The by-election is not an occasion to rejoice because the elected representative would be given a mandate to voice out the sentiments of the people in Parliament,” said Abdul Hadi in his speech at a campaign here today.
Abdul Hadi said he was confident voters in the constituency were matured enough and wise to make the right decision in picking the candidate to represent them.
The Kuala Terengganu by-election, held following the death of incumbent member of parliament Datuk Razali Ismail, would see a three-cornered fight among Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut of PAS and independent candidate Azharudin Mamat @ Adam.
Abdul Hadi also advised PAS supporters to adhere to the procedures and instructions and not raise fear among voters to come out and vote on 17 Jan which is the polling day.
“I urge everyone to face the elections in a very composed and peaceful manner. Follow the instructions given by the leaders and not act on their own accord. We do not want to see supporters stopping buses or vandalising them,” he said.
PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim were also present during the campaign. — Bernama
