Enough capacity to handle electronic waste

December 1, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 Dec 2008: The capacity of two electronic waste or ‘e-waste’ centres in Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan is more than enough to manage the expected increase in e-waste.

Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and the Environment, Datuk Maznah Mazlan, said the two centres had a total capacity of 688,065 metric tonnes.

“There were 52,718 metric tonnes of e-waste last year and this means our capacity is bigger,” he said when replying to a supplementary question by Salleh Kalbi (BN-Silam) in the Dewan Rakyat here today.

Salleh asked if the government was ready to manage the increase in e-waste in the future.

Maznah said the Department of Environment (DOE) also monitored the issuance of licenses to ensure compliance on e-waste.

“The responsibility to collect e-waste is the government’s and those in the industry are required to follow regulations as laid out by the DOE,” he said when replying to a supplementary question by Dr Lo’ Lo’ Mohamad Ghazali (PAS-Titiwangsa).

Maznah said the awareness programme was also implemented by other agencies. — Bernama
