A "liberal" who judges this piece as mere propaganda?
A "liberal" who censures a benevolent experience of one who seeks to understand an “Other” in his quest for a better homeland?
A "liberal" who doubts possibilities of collaboration and workability of different socio-political struggles?

Hmmm....very sad...your journey to liberate yourself will be a long one.

One who cannot believe in hope and faith, and above all, the human compassion underlying all human relations, cannot but fail to conceive any possibility of accord and unity in a realm of differences that exist in our nation.

“So faith, hope and love shall abide these three…but the greatest of all is love.”

Have faith, Hafidz.

Call it what you want. Propaganda piece or an honest personal observation, blah. I personally can testify to the writer's experience. Likewise, I, too was on the campaign trail during the Bukit Gantang by-election and I am in complete agreement with the writer.

Based on the encounters with PAS supporters, leaders, etc. I can safely conclude that PAS is actually a moderate party in essence. Sure, there are the usual fanatics and ultras who rant away about an Islamic state of Malaysia. Which party doesn't have them? However, I believe that those voices are a minority and do not reflect the true stand of PAS. In fact, PAS reflects a progressive and moderate Islamic party.

Many have argued [that] if PR came into power, the coalition really wouldn't hold together simply because of PAS's ideology of an Islamic state, purportedly its sole purpose to exist as a party. Again, political propaganda that has been overly employed by the BN with the help of our local media. It is so overly used that it has become a plain and accepted fact today that this picture of PAS's campaign of an Islamic state is nothing but a painting made to taint PAS as a party and the PR coalition. Ooooooooo.... there [are] cracks in the coalition! What nonsense and shallowness!

There's nothing better than getting down to the ground and finding out for yourself. Can't argue with your own two eyes and ears.

Well, sure you can work together at the ground level. I'm a liberal. Doesn't mean I'm going to have issues working with PAS or Umno/MCA/MIC in any sense.

However, what goes down to the core is simple. While the researcher states that PAS is doggedly trying to implement their Islamic state mantra, and DAP wants a secular constitution, what will they do when they gain power in a state, or [over] the entire nation via [their] coalition?

This article is merely a propaganda piece. It does not highlight the fact that while members of PAS and DAP can campaign [together] for by-elections, it does not mean that they've reached a full understanding [about] the implementation of policies [that are] to be standardised in the PR-controlled states.

A very clear message to the authorities that lies, incitements, intimidations, even murder have not been able to split apart the desire and will of the people who want so much to see a change for a better and more equitable Malaysia. If anything, the authorities' bullying ways have only strengthened their resolve and determination and forced them to acccept and embrace their differences. If I were the present government, I would be worried, very worried, and the first thing I would do would be to ask if I should continue with this tired and dangerous current strategy of playing up religion and race to win over Malay [Malaysian] votes (and hence force the non-Malays to join them) which clearly has not worked out at all.

The writer affirms my conviction, that there are indeed fellow Malaysians/party workers, who, amidst the constant mistaken suppositions by some political leaders, who reduce us into mere denominations of races, religion, language, inter alia, (eg. PAS for Malay-Muslims only, or DAP, predominantly for Mandarin speaking Chinese only) who have divided us by lines of our economic lack (and plenty), or that “they are not our kind”; are able to transcend over and above these posited strong holds. That there are those who rely on their innate human convictions and hopes, over and above the political web and ploy by some of the ‘elites’. Thank you for your humanity and Selamat Merdeka to you. Jazakallah khairan.
