Socso paid out RM1 billion for industrial accidents in 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 Aug 2008: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) paid more than RM1 billion in compensation for industrial accidents and occupational diseases last year, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said.

This is an increase over the 2006 figure, when Socso paid about RM889 million in connection with 68,000 similar accidents and diseases, he said.

Lee was speaking to reporters after opening the 11th Conference and Exhibition on Occupation Safety and Health (COSH) here today.

About 1,200 participants are attending the conference whose theme this year is Decent Work.

More than 30 papers will be presented by local and foreign speakers at the two-day conference which ends tomorrow at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here. – Bernama
