Eight houses destroyed in Miri landslide (Updated)

MIRI, 30 Jan 2009: Eight houses collapsed in landslides at Kampung Lereng Bukit, here today.

Miri OCPD ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim said the first landslide occurred at 9.40am while the second at about 1pm.

A spokesperson of the Fire and Rescue Department said the 74 people from eight families occupying the houses managed to escape.

Some of the victims have been temporarily relocated to the village community hall.

Kampung Lereng Bukit, located at the base of Bukit Kanada, is only 2km away from the a landslide on 16 Jan that killed two Indonesian petrol station workers.

Police also asked the occupants of 18 houses near the Kampung Lereng Bukit to move out as landslides might occur in the area. — Bernama
