PENANG, 8 July 2009: Penang Gerakan Youth today called on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to explain the renting of a luxury bungalow.
The movement’s vice-head, H’ng Khoon Leng, said the explanation would be in line with the concept of “Efficiency, Accountability and Transparency” practised by the state government led by Lim, and that Lim’s avoidance of several questions raised by Gerakan on the matter showed that he was trying to evade the issue.
“Lim had said in a statement that he need not respond to what we had raised because it was a personal matter, and this reflected that the chief minister is arrogant, not transparent, and is trying to avoid petty issues.
“What we raised needs to be answered because it involves the principles of transparency and public expenditure. Don’t the people have the right to know about it?” H’ng said at a press conference here today.
On Monday, it was reported that Gerakan Youth was disappointed with Lim for citing the presence of termites, fire ants and civet cats at his official residence, Seri Teratai, as reasons for his moving into a luxury bungalow.
Consequently, H’ng was reported to have asked for a clarification from Lim on when the chief minister had decided to move out of his official residence; the date of the deposit payment for renting the luxury bungalo; and to show the rental agreement letter and the duration of the agreement.
Gerakan Youth was also reported to have asked for an explanation on the massive renovation works on the bungalow, including the cost, who paid for the renovation, and when Lim would move back to Seri Teratai. — Bernama
