Landslide cuts off major Sarawak road link

MIRI, 21 Jan 2009: A landslide today cut off the road link between Bintulu and Tatau as well as Miri, Mukah and Sibu, causing hundreds of vehicles to be stranded near Tatau, about 50km from Bintulu.

No one was injured in the landslide, which occurred at 5.10am at Km45 of the Bintulu-Tatau Road, said Tatau OCPD DSP Wan Zaizudin (rpt) Zaizudin Wan Jaafar.

He told Bernama that work by the Public Works Department (JKR) to clear the debris from the road was impeded by the continuous flow of soft soil down from a nearby hillside.

Wan Zaizudin said the JKR was concentrating on clearing at least one lane of the road by 6pm today.

For safety reasons, only smaller vehicles might be allowed to pass through, he added.
