I am surprised that the imam has declared that there's no penalty in the Quran or the hadith for the consumption of alcohol, or wine. I hope the Imam should consult the sahih of al-Bukahari and its commentary by Ibn hajar al-'Asqalani, for example - the most common and popular collection of the hadiths - the chapter on the hudud, regarding the penalty for the consumption of alcohol. But, remembering the imam's concluding remark: Islam has not been completed yet, I am not surprised any more!

I agree with MuadDib.

There's no such thing as God. I know this for a fact.

All these arguments are a waste of time.

"So the application of 80 lashes for the consumption of alcohol is not really a correct application for the consumption of alcohol per se, but rather for a crime committed under the influence of alcohol."

In Malaysia the Islamic party PAS has separate queues for men and women, just in case the men get excited standing beside a woman. Based on your interpretation of the above, should not the men be penalised instead of the women?

PAS leader Nik Aziz even suggested that pretty women be discouraged to work because it is easy for pretty women to get husbands while the "ugly" ones are spinsters.

What I cannot understand is why is there no outcry and condemnation against authorities who clearly are bigots and implement judgments against the victims instead of the perpetrators? Why are men who stone a rape victim not brought to an international syariah court, if there is any?

I can only say that Islam is good in theory, however has not been able to develop Muslims to be humane and progressive and mature thinkers. Islam, as it has been practised, has failed to build leaders who impact and make a difference to the lives of poor nations.

Other faiths have reached out to the poor and underprivileged, helped the environment and progressed in modern science but Malaysian Muslims are just interested in having a Malay Muslim in space, never mind how he got there and that he had no substance.

I'm sorry to say that Islam as preached in this country creates fear, destroys and kills, instead of building, love and mercy.

Agree with Kanchil.

This is a very important interview, although there have been similar ones; more importantly, the message needs to be spread out further.

The illustrious Imam Feisal should give his interview to the Utusan Melayu. Talking to the English speaking sector is missing the target audience altogether. This audience must be the Muslim sector, largely bigoted because of years of political brain-washing.

After more than 50 years of dumbing down of the students, both Malays and non-Malays, but especially the Malays, these people have not learned to think for themselves. Like their educational experience, they commit everything to memory - hence their knowledge of and practice of Islam has become something of a hypocritical experience. Pity them, they do not understanding what they do or practise.

Put them on the dock for a discussion and you will only get a wild look - ready to run amok. The only way for a renaissance of the Muslims is to overthrow the system that is sustaining it. That is why all Malaysians must contribute their will and do something for the good of the nation. There is still hope yet - unless the ruling clique becomes desperate and decides on something too drastic.

"Are you going to play God?"

That's a moot point - there's no such thing as God.

We can do whatever we want as long as we have the will, resources, and technology.

I can only wish that wise leaders like imam Feisal could have jurisdiction over misguided Muslims such as those in Malaysia.
